MONROE - From October to May, members of the Green County Home and Community Education organization volunteer their time once a month to read to the students in Leslie Bundy's Head Start/4K class at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School.
Each time they meet, volunteers read a new book to the class and engage in an activity that expands on what they've read. The children get to keep a copy of the book and take it home to read with their family.
Students in Bundy's class received an early Christmas present this fall when volunteers sewed individual book bags and crocheted small "wiggle worms" as Christmas gifts for each student in the class.
The program is called Wisconsin Bookworms, a collaboration and outreach effort of University of Wisconsin-Extension Family Living programs, Wisconsin Association for Home and Community Education and Wisconsin Public Television. It is designed to provide free books and to foster a love of reading in children from limited-income families.
County HCE groups across the state participate in the program. As of May 2016, over 750,000 books have been read to Wisconsin students through the Bookworms program. This is Green County's seventh year participating.
