MONROE - On Tuesday, Nov. 9, the Pathfinder and Adventurer youth group came together to organize a food collection project. Twenty-one adults and young people, age 4 to 64, from as far away as Hollandale and Beloit were involved.

They helped staple the last of the letters onto grocery bags explaining the purpose of gathering food for the local pantry. They embarked on their mission to place the bags on the porches of homes and apartments in Monroe. Pick'n Save and Dick's Supermarket each donated 600 paper bags for the project. The Rich and Martha Ladwig family of Monticello stapled cover letters onto bags, asking people in the community to give to those less fortunate. Community members were invited to put non-perishable food, paper products, and health/beauty products into the paper bag. On Saturday afternoon, members returned to pick donations up placed out on the porch or by the donors door.

The Pathfinder and Adventurer youth are Christian Scouting groups sponsored by the Monroe Seventh-day Adventist Church. The youth and adults pounded the pavement until well after dark walking from home to home. Riley and Cody Spohn from the Monticello school district, as well as Anthony Isensee, who is homeschooled in Blanchardville, volunteered to hand out more bags the following afternoon. Bags were also handed out and picked up in the Clarno area by Karen Meier with help from Joram Hurlbert, David Hurlbert and Adam Zahrt. More than 700 bags were handed out in the community, approximately double what was accomplished the previous year.

In December of 2009, 450 pounds were collected for the pantry. This year, 1,723 pounds were donated by community members.
