MONROE - City of Monroe Administrator Phil Rath was inspired by a recent discussion on community involvement and work-life balance during a meeting of the Green County Leaders. As a result of his involvement in program, Rath challenged his fellow classmates to be part of a team in a food donation program.
The Million Pound Challenge, a partnership between Second Harvest Food Bank and the Princeton Club Health Club, donated food to local pantries each time participants exercised or lost weight. For each pound lost or hour exercised, 10 pounds of food was donated to local food pantries. Many of Rath's classmates joined the team and spread the word to other leaders in the county. Green County's team effort resulted in a donation of 920.5 pounds of food to local food pantries. Overall, the Million Pound Challenge resulted in 1,020,500 pounds of food donated to pantries, with 242 organizations, 33 schools, and 4,513 individuals participating.
Green County Leaders is an education program designed to help build community leadership. Participants meet one day per month for nine months. Programs focus on building community leadership skills and raising awareness of community issues, including local government, healthcare, economic development, education and more.
