MONROE - Green County hosted the 2016 Southern Wisconsin 4-H Area Animal Science Day July 1.
Animal science day is hosted by three counties in the state every summer. It gives 4-H and FFA members an opportunity to expand their communication and decision-making skills through judging and great experiences. Other purposes of the event include increasing the availability of educational opportunities in the 4-H Animal Science Projects and furthering youths' knowledge of animals through breeding, market evaluation and management information.
This year's Green County event included a dairy cattle showmanship contest, evaluation of dairy cattle in both the junior and senior division and livestock evaluation for both juniors and seniors. The livestock evaluation included beef cattle, goats, sheep and swine. For the evaluation contest, 4-H and FFA judges used their knowledge to place the four animals in each class based on breeding or market characteristics. In the senior division, the students had to give reasons to a state specialist as to why they placed a specific class. This helps the students improve their confidence, defend their reasoning and work on their decision-making abilities. For the junior judges, there was an educational program and group reasoning justifications.
Green County had a total of 17 4-H members registered in the contest. Reece Rufer took first place Individual in the Senior Livestock Judging Contest. Marissa Vosberg took first place Individual in the Junior Dairy Judging Contest.
Vosberg led the Junior Dairy Judging Team to a second-place finish with teammates Natalie Roe, Nicholas Roe and Emma Hendrickson. The team will be moving on to the state competition.
For the Senior Dairy Judging Team, Ryan Smith took first place for Reasons. The Senior Dairy Judging Team, which consisted of Smith, Cole Mahlkuch, Brian McCullough and Clayton Mahlkuch, took fourth place overall.
The producers, volunteers and steering committee worked hard to make the event a success.
