MONROE — The Green County Historical Museum will open for the season on Saturday, June 4. The museum will be open both Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4 p.m.
The front gates are open and parking is in the parking lot in the rear with a rear gate open during that time. The one-room Bethel Schoolhouse is also open for touring. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
This year as last, the wheel chair accessible lower level is open with newly lighted and designed displays that depict life from the 1800s to the 1960s.
A Carl Marty “corner” is displayed with pictures of and paintings by the local historian, cheesemaker and artist. Marty was instrumental in forming our Green County Historical Society in the 1930s and served on the board for many years.
Another display of local interest is the “Tommy James and the Shondells” display located as the focal point in the foyer. Tommy came to live in Monroe in the late 1950s when his parents managed the Eugene Hotel. He continues to keep in contact with many friends he made here.
On May 14, the museum hosted a very successful “Heritage Fest” highlighting local activities of interest from yester-year and present times.
The Society’s Annual Meeting at Lincoln Park, with tours of the inside of the water tower, will be held Jun 18. Refreshments served. Because of this meeting, the museum will be closed on June 18.
Staff are at the museum on Monday mornings to answer questions, or contact Linda Lostetter at 608-325-9730 or lostetter68@gmail.com.
