Girl earns accolades for helping shelter

MONROE - Marissa Vosberg, 7, is already a champion of the Green County Humane Society's animals.

Marissa discovered the shelter at age 2 1/2, falling in love with a dog named Jethro at a community event. When she went to visit him at the shelter, she was very disappointed to learn that he was gone. After an explanation from her parents, Laura and Phil, she was delighted to learn that Jethro had found his forever home. Thus, her love of the shelter and its animals was born.

On her third birthday, Marissa decided to have a puppy party. Instead of gifts for herself, she chose to have her friends and family get needed items for the shelter animals. After her party, Marissa and her parents went to the shelter and dropped off the items. This tradition has continued for the past five years, with Marissa donating cash, collars, leashes, food, toys, treats, litter, towels, blankets, and gift cards on her birthday. In addition, Marissa volunteers to play with the cats and dogs at the shelter. She also participates in community fundraisers for the shelter, donating baked goods and aluminum cans.

Marissa has earned several awards for her selfless love of the animals. At the age of 3, Marissa was recognized by Build-A-Bear Workshop with a "2007 Huggable Heroes Honorable Mention" for her contributions to the Green County Humane Society. She was one of more than 1,300 children under the age of 18 who were nominated for the award. In 2010, she was honored as a Store-Level Winner in the Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship Program for her "outstanding volunteer efforts and contributions within her community." Also, in 2010, she received the Certificate of Participation and Recognition for her nomination in American Humane's Be Kind to Animals Kid Contest for "selflessly helping animals and setting a positive example of compassion and kindness."
