MONROE - The Monroe Public Library and Green County Genealogy Society will host a party to commemorate the release of data from the 1940 census from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 13, at the library, 925 16th Ave.
Since personal information in the federal censuses is restricted for 72 years, the National Archives and Records Administration will release the census in digital format to the public on April 2.
The federal census, which has been conducted every 10 years since 1790, is one of the most important resources used by genealogists for family research. The 1940 census included information that had never been asked before. With the release of information, there will also be digital images available.
Library staff and Green County Genealogy Society members will be on hand to assist researchers in finding released information.
There will be refreshments and door prizes. The event is free of charge, but registration is required through the library. To register, contact the library at (608) 328-7010.
