DARLINGTON - A new Lafayette County Genealogy Society Research Center will have a grand opening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 14 and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 15 at 309 Main St.

The Lafayette County Genealogy Society has been actively assisting in genealogical research since its formation in April 1984. Along the way, the group has published many publications containing information about births, deaths, marriages and probate information that assists people in genealogy research of family members and others. The society currently schedules quarterly meetings that are open to the public and include guest speakers. The society is also known for sponsoring field trips. They have received donations over the years of genealogical information that provide beneficial resource information for family trees and other historical research.

Over the past few years, LCGS has lost two productive members of its society: Fran and Glenn Matl. The Matls did research including recording interments in many cemeteries in Lafayette County. Their children asked that LCGS put the Matls' research to use by making it available to the public.

The donated information was sorted and cataloged, but that still left the LCGS to find a way to make it publicly available because it didn't have a public facility. Through the efforts of longtime LCGS member Jim Ronnerud, a storefront in Darlington was found, and Duane Jorgenson was willing to rent space within his 309 Main St. building to the LCGS. The society will now be able to share the genealogical and historical information within their holdings that members have been storing at their homes, along with the research by the Matls. Refreshments will be available at the grand opening, along with publications for sale, freebies and door prizes given away.
