MONROE - Green County Master Gardeners Association recognized 41 Green County area residents for earning their Master Gardener certification at its recent annual meeting.

The Master Gardener program serves the needs of all horticulturists in the Green County area by providing continuing education for its members, providing community services through volunteer activities, exchanging gardening ideas, promoting responsible and sound gardening practices and providing a link between the community and University of Wisconsin-Extension.

To earn the UW-Extension Master Gardener certification, participants are required to complete 36 hours of classroom training, which covers a variety of horticultural topics including soils, botany, entomology, plant pathology, houseplants, landscaping, turf, vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants.

After completing the course work and passing an exam, participants become Master Gardener interns for one year. During the year, they must complete at least 24 hours of community service before receiving their official Master Gardener volunteer certification.

Recertification is required annually and to retain their certification, Master Gardeners must attend a minimum of 10 hours of professional development in addition to providing 24 hours of volunteer service each year.

UW-Extension Master Gardener volunteers include Lois Baker, Norma Bader, Mary Jackson, Kathy Broger, Cheryl Rezabek, Jayne Butts, Susan Konopacki, Theresa Colney, Eugene Gessler, Lynn Lokken, Tanna McKeon, Debra Kleppe, Kris Winkler, Rae Wellnitz, Patty Noble, Sally Bear, Rita Falsey, Kristi Leonard, Michael Colney, Ricky Kiesling, Rudy Kaderly, Marilyn Sandin-Ross, Mike Davis, Kimberly Berg, Linda Boll, Dan Chapman, Gregg Smith, Tom Voight, Sharon Adams, Joyce Anderson, Joanne Clark, Mary Alice Hart, Sam Kaderly, Roseann Meixelsperger, Mary Nelson, Patricia Noble, Ann Marie Ott, Candy Pearson, Jack Policastro, Paul Roemer and Becky Wegmueller.
