Gardeners group to present symposium

MONROE - The Green County Master Gardeners Association will present its eighth annual Gardening Symposium, "Garden Inspirations for All Seasons - Gardening with a Purpose," from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 14 at the Peppercorn Banquets at the Ludlow Mansion, 1421 Mansion Dr.

The event is open to both experienced and novice gardeners. Participants will receive lunch, refreshments and resource materials with their paid registration.

Speakers and topics for the symposium include:

Mark Dwyer of the Rotary Botanical Gardens in Janesville will be speaking on "Ornamental Edibles." Dwyer will teach how to utilize "ornamental edibles" to allow for the wonderful combination of beauty and function.

"Attracting Pollinators to Your Garden" will be the topic that Christy Stewart of the USDA Ag Research Service will be speaking on. Learn about bee biology and behavior and what can done to help support these essential pollinators in yards.

Kate Heiber-Cobb, from the Madison Permaculture Guild, will discuss "Holistic Approach to Gardening; Sustainable Gardening with Nature." Learn the basics of permaculture and how this design system creates diverse ecosystems on small or large properties.

Farmer Pat and Dr. Bob will be giving the do's and don'ts of beekeeping by teaching "Honey 101." Those who attend will explore how to get started in beekeeping and demonstrate equipment needed.

The final segment regarding "Healthy Soils and Balanced Nutrients" will be presented by Duane Siegenthaler of Midwestern BioAg. The presentation will teach the three basic parts of the soil system, how these parts interact with each other and the benefits of a balanced system.

Early registration for the Annual Gardening Symposium is $35 and closes on March 6. After March 6, the price is $40 for late registration and walk-ins.
