MONROE - Green County Master Gardener Volunteers are planning a tour on Thursday, April 23, at Abrahams Woods and the public is invited. Abrahams Woods is located southwest of Albany on Wisconsin 59 and west on Oliver Road. The tour will begin at 7 p.m., rain or shine. Due to limited parking, a car pool will leave from the UW-Extension office at Pleasant View at 6:30 p.m.
Access to the public to tour the woods is limited, and Abraham's Woods features an old growth stand of southern mesic forest, which is increasingly rare in Wisconsin. Sugar maple, basswood and red oak dominate the forest. The woods is best known for its spectacular display of spring wildflowers and is noted by botanists for its floristic richness including two rare species. Herbaceous plants include sharp lobed hepatica, dogtooth violet, false rue anemone, nodding trillium and dutchmen's breeches. The property is owned by the University of Wisconsin and was designated a State Natural Area in 1961.
Dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. A short business meeting will follow after the tour.
