FREEPORT - Freeport's 150-year anniversary of the famous Lincoln Douglas Debate will be celebrated with a four-day festival on Labor Day weekend, Aug. 29 to Sept. 1.
To complement this celebration and add to the fun of the festivities, the Lincoln Douglas Society has worked with the Illinois Secretary of State to create a commemorative license plate, decorated with a special Freeport Lincoln Douglas Debate logo.
The commemorative plates may be ordered at local banks including Amcore Bank, Cornerstone Credit Union, Fifth/Third Bank, Kent Bank, Midwest Bank, Northwest Federal Credit Union, State Bank, Union Savings Bank, and U.S. Bank as well as at the Freeport/Stephenson County Visitors Center.
A current registration card, driver's license number, plate number, and expiration date of current plates are required at the time of purchase. Plates will be mailed directly to the purchaser.
Cost for the license plates, which come in a set of two, is $40.
Sales officially began April 15 and will continue through June 30 or until all are sold.
The Lincoln Douglas license plates are legal to drive anywhere during the allotted display time (July 4, 2008 to September 1, 2008).
According to Brian Borger, coordinator of the License Plate Program, "It would be great if all of us in town put these on our cars. It would be an incredible way to help promote this exciting event."
Proceeds of the sale go toward funding the three-day festival celebrating the 150th anniversary of the debate. For more information, contact Brian Borger at (815) 238-0796.
