BROOKLYN - Woodland owners who attend a forestry field day in the town of Brooklyn from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Hall Tree Farm, W837 Yarwood Road, Brooklyn, will learn how to manage black walnut and oak timber stands and when to harvest black walnut. Other topics will include caring for stream banks, controlling invasive plants, growing shiitake mushrooms, restoring a 19th century barn and living with solar power.

The field day, to be held on 160 acres of farmland, woodlands and low land along Liberty Creek, is hosted by owners Dave and Evelyn Hall, who have owned and managed the farm since 1998. The field day is an annual event sponsored by the Black Hawk Chapter of the Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association and is co-hosted by the Walnut Council and Wisconsin Tree Farm Committee. Presenting the oak and walnut topics are two experienced local foresters, John Nielsen and Matt Singer.

The Halls both grew up on dairy farms and have long been associated with farmland, timber and animals. They are involved with tree management but also own a limestone barn. They put together a blog, with photos, while the barn was being restored in 2008. Since then, they have added a deck and solar-electric panels.

To register for the event, contact Carol Nielsen at bhc.wwoa@gmail.com or 608-206-9682 and include name, number attending and contact information. A more detailed announcement can be found on the calendar of the WWOA website, wisconsinwoodlands.org.

There is no cost to attend but donations are appreciated. Drinks, snacks and desserts will be provided, but attendees may want to take a sack lunch.
