Jennifer Schierer Hired as nurse navigator
FREEPORT - FHN has hired Jennifer Schierer, RN, as the Nurse Navigator for its new Women's Diagnostic Center, located at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.

A nurse navigator serves as a patient advocate and educator, coordinating testing and care and helping to support each patient and her family if testing is needed beyond a routine mammogram. A nurse navigator also works as her patient's healthcare team "point person," coordinating the recommendations of numerous specialists to help her patient make the best, most informed choices about her care.

"It can be frightening to hear that you need more tests after a routine mammogram," Schierer said. "I'm here to make sure that each patient knows her options for testing and treatment, if it's necessary, and to work with the patient, her family and her healthcare providers through the process."

Schierer holds a bachelors degree from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and a nursing degree from Highland Community College.

As Nurse Navigator, she will work with the experts in FHN's imaging department as well as with the whole spectrum of healthcare providers, from each patient's primary care provider to any specialists necessary. This healthcare team is together throughout the patient's testing and treatment, with the Nurse Navigator available to support and educate the patient and her family.

To make an appointment for your mammogram, call (815) 599-6860. For more information on the FHN Women's Diagnostic Center and the patient-focused care coordinated by the Nurse Navigator, call (815) 599-6313 or visit www.fhn.org.
