FFA students fare well at contest

LANCASTER - The Grant County Land and Water Conservation Department hosted the 2013 Southwest Wisconsin Land Judging on Friday, Oct. 11, about four miles northwest of Lancaster.

The event alternates between Grant, Green and Lafayette counties with FFA students from area counties competing. About 132 students from eight schools participated in the contest. Those participating were the FFA chapters from Belmont, Black Hawk, Cuba City, Monroe, Monticello, Mt. Horeb, Potosi and River Ridge.

The students reviewed four soil pits and evaluated soil properties, estimated slope, ranked land classes and recommended conservation practices in the contest.

The top five teams with their total score were: Cuba City, 895; Monticello, 890; Monroe, 884; Potosi, 869; and River Ridge, 842.

The second-place Monticello team consisted of Kolton Shulka, Ryan Smith, Clare Gietzel and Zach Price.

The third-place Monroe team consisted of Austin Minder, Dani Schneider and Mark Jenson.

The top five individuals with their total score were: Charlie Hamilton, Cuba City, 328; Lucas Marty, Monticello, 327; Mark Jenson, Monroe, 315; Paige Brinkman, Potosi, 311; and Clare Gietzel, Monticello, 311.
