Farm Bureau announces essay contest winners

MONROE - Fourth- and fifth-graders in Green County were invited to participate in the 2017 Wisconsin Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom essay contest. There were 69 local entries turned in for this year's contest that focused on "Cranberry production in Wisconsin during one of the four seasons."

The winners of the 2017 Green County essay contest are: In first place, Kelsi Cameron, fourth grade, Juda Elementary School; second place, Sadie Wilkins, fourth grade, Monticello Elementary School; and third place, Ruby Brandt, fourth grade, Northside Elementary School, Monroe.

The winners read their essays to attendees at the Green County Breakfast on the Farm May 27 at Rollin' Green Dairy Farm. They also were recognized with a plaque sponsored by Rural Insurance agent Craig Kamholz, JBM Insurance Group, and with the 2017 Wisconsin Ag in the Classroom book of the year, "Time for Cranberries," sponsored by the Green County Farm Bureau.

On behalf of the Green County Farm Bureau, $150 was issued to the classroom of the first-place essay, $100 to the classroom of the second-place essay and $75 to the classroom of the third-place essay. In addition to the three winners, Insight FS sponsored a $50 gift card for each teacher to purchase items for the classroom for having their entire class participate in the essay contest. The following teachers encouraged their classrooms to participate in this year's essay contest: Katie Abraham and Kirsten Steinmann, Northside Elementary, Monroe; Penny Ramos, Juda School District; and Andrea Figi and Angie Richter, Monticello Elementary School.

The Green County Ag Chest provided Green County Breakfast on the Farm tickets to the winners and two of their family members.

The contest is sponsored on the state level through the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom Program, We Energies and Insight FS.
