MONROE - The Green County Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' Leadership Board has approved a $2,000 autism service dog grant for Scott and Katie Jacobson's 11-year-old autistic son.
The grant will supplement funds the family raises at a rate of $1 for every $2, up to the $2,000 maximum. The family has a number of fundraisers planned this summer including several that are being organized and carried out by their daughter.
The service dog will accompany the boy everywhere, including to school and on social outings. It will help calm him during emotional autism upsets and keep him safe as he is often unaware of his surroundings.
The Jacobson family, Monroe, is hopeful that the service dog will promote their son's peer acceptance and possibly encourage his speech by bridging the gap between himself and others.
