Do you have a "green thumb" when it comes to growing weeds? Are you proud of those weeds that grow so easily at your house? Or does your "green thumb" lend itself to more profitable farm produce - namely corn?
Then it's time to show off your skills. On Sunday, July 24, you will have the opportunity to enter your "green thumb" projects in the Tallest Weed and Tallest Corn contests. Entries should be brought to the area of the Big Radio tent, on the Green County Fair grounds between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Entries will be judged during the Cheese and Youth Recognition Auctions, with the winners being announced following the judging. Remember, lots of tender loving care and maybe even a little fertilizer, may give you the winning edge.
Are you thinking about entering in the Open Class? Entry blanks for the open class are due no later than 4 p.m. Saturday, July 2. Actual items entered should be brought in to the fair on Wednesday, July 20, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Fairbooks are available at most Green County Banks or at the Fairgrounds. Entry information is also available online at www.greencountyfair.net.
A note to those of you who are planning to attend any of the Grandstand shows: Please make every attempt to purchase your tickets prior to just before the shows start. Right now tickets can be purchased online at www.greencountyfair.net for the Tractor Pull, the John Michael Montgomery Show and the two Demolition Derbies. Tickets will go on sale at the fairgrounds starting the morning of July 18 at 8 a.m. and remain on sale during the regular ticket booth hours, until the events are over. By purchasing early, you can avoid the frustration of standing in long lines and possibly delaying your getting to your seats before the shows start.
We also ask that you try to take your seats at least 20 minutes before the start time of the show.
If you are not sure what days you would like to attend the fair, be sure to check out the daily list of activities at www.greencountyfair.net.
Following all the fair activities, the Green County fair will be hosting one additional event. The Carson and Barnes Circus will be coming to the fairgrounds in Monroe on Aug. 18. This circus is one of the few left, that actually performs until a "Big Top." Between approximately 9 and 10:30 a.m., the morning of the show, "youth of all ages" are invited to come out and watch them hoist the tent, with assistance from the elephants.
Their large petting zoo can also be viewed at that time. Two complete performances will be held later in the day and evening. As the date gets closer, we will have more information on where you can get your tickets for this big event.
