MONROE - Laura Eckroat, third-grade teacher at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School and member of the local Alpha Delta Kappa-Omicron Chapter, received the Kathryn Saunders Grant from Ruth Tschanz, immediate past state president of Alpha Delta Kappa of Wisconsin.
ADK is an international honorary organization of women educators dedicated to the promotion of educational excellence, altruism and world understanding.
The $200 grant will be used to begin a program called Readers Theater, which involves students reading a script adapted from literature and the audience picturing the action from hearing the script. No sets, costumes, props or memorized lines are required. Readers use voice, facial expressions and some gestures.
Eckroat will begin working with third-grade students in January at Abraham Lincoln. She hopes to expand it to kindergarten through fifth grades and into the community. She has worked with Readers Theater at Manara Academy in Texas, where she taught before coming to Monroe.
