ARGYLE - The Wisconsin Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star is a charitable organization that has 67 chapters throughout the state. In the last 10 years the organization has donated more than $525,000 to various charities including heart fund, cancer research, Make a Wish Foundation, Alzheimer's, the Arthritis Foundation, HOPE, local food pantries, youth scholarships and those pursuing religious training.

The members of Alpha Chapter of Argyle and St. Omar Chapter of Monroe will be supporting the Grand Chapter's project, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, this next year.

The mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is to: cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Blood cancers such as leukemia, Hodgkins lymphomas, non Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes are cancers that originate in bone marrow or lymphatic tissues. They are considered to be related cancers because they involve the uncontrolled growth of cells with similar functions and origins. The diseases result from an acquired genetic injury to the DNA of a single cell, which become abnormal (malignant) and multiples continuously. The accumulation of malignant cells interferes with the body's production of healthy blood cells.

There are three "Light the Night" walks in which Eastern Star members will be participating. These walks are open to all. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's nationwide evening walks are held to build awareness of blood cancers and raise funds for a cure.

The southeastern walk will be held Sept. 16 at O'Donnell Park in downtown Milwaukee. The northeastern area walk is Sept. 24 at Lambeau Field and the final walk is Sept. 30 at Olin Turville Park in Madison.

Walkers will carry illuminated balloons - white for survivors and red for supporters to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer. For more information and to sign up to walk at any one or all three events, check the website at: www.LLS.org.
