MONROE - The Humane Society of the United States estimates that 6 to 8 million pets enter shelters each year. Of those animals, nearly 4 million are euthanized each year because of overpopulation in the shelters.
Even more frightening is the rise in unemployment and the number of people unable to care for their pets. The Director of the American Humane Association estimates that 18,000 to 26,000 pets are in danger of losing their homes each day due to high foreclosure and joblessness rates.
Everyone Needs a Home (ENAH) and the Green County Humane Society (GCHS) have partnered to form a Pet Food Pantry aimed at keeping animals with their families and out of overcrowded shelters or, worse, from being abandoned. The Pet Food Pantry is open once a month and serves families in Lafayette and Green Counties who need assistance feeding their pets.
Donations are needed. To make a one-time donation, or donate on an on-going basis, contact Peggy Miller at (608) 439-1021 or mamiller@everyoneneedsahome.org. Anyone interested in sponsoring a donation drive for a community organization or place of business should call Paul Barrett at (608)328-4420 or pbarrett@tds.net.
Both ENAH and GCHS are 501(c)3 charities; donations are tax deductible.
