MONROE - The Monroe school district's Facilities Committee met the evening of March 7 to tour both Abraham Lincoln Elementary School and Monroe High School to gauge the current condition of the two buildings as part of the facilities master planning process.
Formed in January, the committee serves to assist the district as it addresses the safety, environmental and maintenance needs at each of the district's schools by evaluating and prioritizing potential capital improvements.
In addition to evaluating the bricks and mortar, the committee will explore opportunities to create modern learning environments to enhance student learning. The group already has conducted similar tours at Parkside Elementary School and Monroe Middle School.
Led by representatives from Plunkett Raysich Architects and CG Schmidt Construction, two firms engaged by the district to lend technical expertise throughout the process, the committee has begun compiling a list of potential needs for each school. Examples of such needs include site and grading improvements, enhanced safety and security, ADA accessibility, improving indoor air quality and LED lighting upgrades at all schools.
The tours uncovered similar needs at Abraham Lincoln Elementary, with an emphasis on water damage repair due to a leaky exterior, kitchen and cafeteria improvements, an identifiable and secure main entrance and HVAC upgrades to improve indoor air quality.
At the high school, the facilities committee noted a need to repair the science wing, address water damage and grading issues, locker room ventilation, flooring replacement, renovations to the cafeteria, HVAC and electrical improvements, secure entrances and improve outdoor athletic facilities.
The committee will meet several more times to discuss the facilities and maintenance needs before making a formal recommendation to the board for action. The next meeting will be at 4:30 p.m. March 21 at Northside Elementary School. At this meeting, the group will start with a building tour, do a presentation on economic development for the Monroe area and review several facility improvement options created by the consultants for consideration.
Those interested in joining the committee or in learning more about the facilities planning process should contact District Administrator Rick Waski via email at rick-waski@monroe.k12.wi.us.
An executive summary of the Facilities Master Planning Report will be found on the district's website in the coming weeks at www.monroeschools.com.
