Darlington’s Meister heading to state American Legion competition

DARLINGTON — On Saturday, Jan. 21 the 3rd District American Legion held its American Legion Oratorical Scholarship Contest. The students representing Green, Iowa and Lafayette Counties participated in the contest.  

Each of the students had to speak on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution with a speech they prepared.  The speech is to be between 8 to 10 minutes. The next part of the contest the students studied on four amendments and one of them was picked.  

The students then had to speak on the chosen amendment for 3 to 5 minutes. 

Josie Meister, representing Lafayette County and Darlington Post 214, won first place and received a plaque along with a $300 scholarship check. Meister will be moving on to the state competition that will be held in Ripon Saturday, Feb. 11.

Brook Allison, representing Green County and Monticello Post 256, will be the alternate, and she received a plaque along with a $150 scholarship check.  

Madisen Crow, representing Iowa County and Barneveld Post 433, received a plaque and a scholarship check for $100. 

The 3rd District thanked the three judges that helped with the Oratorical: Charolette Jerney, Tammy Wherle and Leona Havens. The American Legion also thanked the parents and family members of the students who came and supported them, as well as to all the Legion Members that were there to support the Legion program.
