DARLINGTON - Darlington Middle School will host the Wisconsin School Music Association sanctioned Solo and Ensemble Music Festival on Saturday, March 7.

During the festival, which is free and open to the public, music students from numerous area schools will perform vocal and instrumental solos, duets, trios and small ensembles before an adjudicator.

WSMA music festivals annually attract thousands of students from middle, junior high and high schools throughout Wisconsin. The festival, held at Darlington Middle School on March 7, will draw students from a number of area schools, including Cuba City Junior High School, Darlington Elementary/Middle School, Iowa Grant Middle School, Mineral Point Middle School and Southwestern Wisconsin Middle and High Schools.

"These festivals are focused on providing a positive learning experience for students with lifelong educational benefits," Gregg Butler, WSMA interim executive director, said.

The primary purposes of WSMA music festivals are to:

• Establish standards of quality for music literature.

• Motivate students to prepare and perform to the best of their abilities.

• Improve students' understanding of music literature and music concepts (performance with understanding).

• Support improvement of school music programs through individual and group achievement.

• Encourage exploration of diverse musical styles and ensemble combinations.
