DARLINGTON - The original Broadway performance of "Annie Get Your Gun" debuted in May 1946, and over 50 years later, Peter Stone's 1999 revival of the musical opened to delighted audiences.
The regeneration of this musical took place when most current cast and crew members of Darlington High School's production of "Annie Get Your Gun" were only toddlers. Parents in 1999 could have hardly imagined that their toddlers, who were probably performing daily in their own way back then, would be on the DHS auditorium stage 16 years later. The DHS renewal of the "Annie Get Your Gun" revival opens Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The life of an average cast and crew member of the DHS fall musical has been in the balance somewhere between reality and the theater for the last two months. For nearly four out of every five of these students, part of their daily reality has been pursuing excellence in a high school sport as a participant or cheerleader. Many are multiple-sport athletes and cheerleaders. If not excelling on an athletic course, field, or court, the students are excelling in the classroom and at a part-time job.
Among the toddlers-turned-teenage-thespians, are Sam Cohen (Frank Butler) and Katie Calvert (Annie Oakley) leading the cast and crew of more than 100 students in a school of approximately 220 students.
In addition to the Friday debut, another evening performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The musical will close with a 1:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Tickets will be sold in advance for $8 in the main office of Darlington High School until 4 p.m. Wednesday. Depending on availability, tickets will also be sold at the door before each performance. For questions regarding ticket availability, call the high school main office at 608-776-4001.
