PLATTEVILLE - Two University of Wisconsin-Platteville students from Darlington were among 12 others and two lecturers recently partnered with an instructor at Platteville High School to host the first annual Physical Education Engagement Seminar at Platteville High School. Twenty-three local physical education instructors attended, coming from districts extending from Sun Prairie to Dubuque, Iowa.

Student presenters included Rebecca Mathias and Ryan Murphy, both of Darlington.

At the workshop, the students, led by Susanna Swenson, lecturer of health and human performance at UW-Platteville; Tim Swenson, senior lecturer of adapted physical education at UW-Platteville; and Maureen Vorwald, a physical education instructor at Platteville High School, provided six professional development sessions on various physical education topics. The goal of the workshop was to provide professional development opportunities to local educators in terms of assessment, skill and strategy development, as well as provide disability awareness and critical thinking skills for students within the physical education classroom.

Students involved in the workshop are enrolled in Swenson's Middle School/High School Physical Education Methods course. All students are health and human performance physical education teacher education majors.

The physical education workshop was made possible with the support of the Student Research and Engagement Fund (formerly PACCE), a UW-Platteville initiative and funding source for community-based scholarship of engagement and undergraduate research projects that involve students, faculty, staff and community partners.

High-impact practices, such as collaborating with local educators to plan and implement a mutually-beneficial workshop, are a component of UW-Platteville's 2017-2018 strategic work plan, which includes the institutional priorities of improving student learning, data-informed decision making, budgeting and planning, supporting student success through retention and recruitment initiatives, and campus climate.
