DARLINGTON - Darlington's Cinco de Mayo celebration provided budding and experienced artists the opportunity to paint the first quilt block planned by the Barn Quilts of Lafayette County committee. Cinco de Mayo Barn Quilt painting was a "Join Hands Day" event sponsored by the Lafayette County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
"Join Hands Day" is a national volunteer day designed to generate awareness about the powerful impact of volunteerism. It highlights the positive impact volunteers have on communities while bringing youth and adults together to build friendships across generations.
More than 35 people braved cool temperatures and wind to paint a red, white or blue square or triangle of the quilt pattern "Dutch Rose." The Dutch Rose pattern was chosen because it is very intricate and provides many areas for volunteers to paint. Half of the 8' x 8' barn quilt was painted at Cinco de Mayo. The other half will be painted by at the Lafayette County Dairy Breakfast on June 14. The Join Hands Day Barn Quilt will be used as a traveling display to promote the Barn Quilts of Lafayette County project.
People can stop by and paint a square or triangle at the Barn Quilt booth at the Lafayette County Dairy Breakfast. To contribute time, talents, supplies or donations to the Barn Quilts of Lafayette County project, contact Mary Jo Stutenberg (608) 342-1625 or Candi Fitzsimons (608) 776-4591.
