DARLINGTON - Despite efforts at education and prevention, children in Lafayette County continue to be poisoned by lead from peeling paint, lead-contaminated dust and other sources in their homes. Lead poisoning can cause severe health, learning, and behavioral problems in children. Lead poisoning occurs when the body is exposed to a large amount of lead or continuous small amounts of lead. It is recommended that all children have a routine lead screening at both 1 year of age and again at 2 years of age.
Lafayette County Health Department has been working in lead poisoning prevention in Lafayette County since 1991 and screens children free of charge in an attempt to find children who may have high levels of lead in their system.
The next scheduled lead screening clinics will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. on Fridays, June 13 and June 27, at the Health Department.
Call the Health Department at (608) 776-4895 to make an appointment and/or for more information regarding lead poisoning. Take advantage of this free service to test your child for blood lead.
