MADISON - Dance Wisconsin will perform the ballet "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" at 2 p.m. March 11 and 12 at the Mitby Theater on Madison College's Truax Campus, 1701 Wright St., Madison, in its fourth performance of the season.
Choreographed by Chelsey Bradley, this ballet is for all ages. With assistance from costumer Ashley Dahm, Bradley's choreography will bring to life favorite Wonderland characters, such as the White Rabbit, Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat and Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.
The ballet begins with Alice feeling bored while sitting on the riverbank with her elder sister, who is reading from a book. To her surprise, Alice notices a White Rabbit with a pocket watch. She follows the rabbit, tumbling down a rabbit hole and landing in a hallway filled with doors. A series of adventures culminates in Alice as a guest of the Mad Hatter, March Hare and dormouse at the Mad Hatter's tea party. After leaving the tea party, Alice finds herself in the Queen of Hearts' garden, where the Queen causes much mayhem. The Queen dances for the court and believes her dancing is pure beauty; she cheats at croquet and then accuses Alice of stealing tarts. A trial begins and Alice's safety is in question when the Queen yells, "Off with her head."
Performing from Monroe are Jessica Schmitt, a student at Monona Academy of Dance and daughter of Julie and Peter Schmitt. Schmitt is a member of the Dance Wisconsin company and is dancing multiple roles, including the sister of Alice and a flower and tutu card in Act III.
Also dancing from Monroe are Spencer, Quentin and Kierstyn Vestin, children of Paula and Chris Vestin. The Vestin children dance at Brodhead Dance Academy. Spencer is dancing in the role of the King, Quentin is performing in the caucus race, and Kierstyn is dancing in the role of one of the ladybugs in the garden.
Also from the area are Emily and Ella Ginocchio, daughters of Martha and David Ginocchio. Emily is a member of the Dance Wisconsin Company and is performing several roles including the role of March Hare. Ella is one of the ladybugs in the garden.
