MONROE - Area residents are lacing up their walking shoes in preparation for Monroe's fifth annual "Great Strides: Taking Steps to Cure Cystic Fibrosis" walk planned for Saturday, May 21 at Twining Park in Monroe. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the 1.2 mile-walk kicks off at 11 a.m.
Great Strides is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's largest and most successful national fund-raising event. May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that substantially impairs normal respiratory and digestive functions, making breathing and eating a challenge. Advances continue to be made in finding a cure. For the first time in the CF Foundation's history, scientific opportunities are coming at a pace that is exceeding its ability to fund them.
"Monroe has raised almost $70,000 for research in the past four years doing the Great Strides walk. We are looking forward to our fifth year with great anticipation that we will reach our fundraising goals," said Rena Welty, Monroe Great Strides Walk chairman and mother of a child with CF. "We've had a great time at this event and always welcome new walkers and/or donations.
Nearly 90 percent of every dollar of revenue goes to support vital CF research, medical and education programs. Donations are tax-deductible.
To sign up for the walk or to donate, visit www.cff.org/great_strides. Donations can also be mailed by making a check, payable to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, to Welty, 2420 12th St., Monroe, WI 53566. Her phone number is (608) 289-7135 and e-mail is monroegreatstrides@yahoo.com.
