MONROE - James W. Curran, from Zilmer-Riley American Legion Post No. 84, was chosen Green County Legionnaire of the Year by the Green County Council of the American Legion.
He has been the commander, past commander, first and second vice-commanders, sergeant at arms, member at large, honor guard and is on the Green County Fair Committee. He also volunteers to help at the Friday night fish fry and the Sunday breakfast. He assists in the Memorial Day Program by helping in the raising of the American flags on the "Avenue of Flags," being a squad leader for decorating graves, and is one of the first in line to take down the flags and store them.
While serving as a member of the Green County Fair Committee he puts up the lighting and sound system, puts up the signage, installs the dance floor using his own pallets, and has kept the tables in good repair. Curran also volunteers as Officer of the Day and assists at the beer stand.
Just recently Curran volunteered to take charge of the summer cabin in Hazel Hurst on Lake Tomahawk when the current caretaker resigned.
Curran is not only a member of the Legion and the Green County Voiture Forty & Eight, he is also a member of the Monroe Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus, the Loyal Order of the Moose, and a member of the Shamrock Club of Lafayette County. Curran has been and still is an active participant in the cheese industry of Green County.
He is a member of the National Historic Cheesemaking Center, Inc. also known as the Green County Welcome Center, and he volunteers as a tour guide at the National Cheesemaking Center.
