County phragmite control is team effort

There are three stands of phragmites in Green County that will soon be controlled with herbicide through funding from the Wisconsin DNR. The treatments will begin this fall and continue through 2020.

MONROE — The Green County Land and Water Conservation Department has teamed up with Southwest Badger RC&D to control three stands of invasive phragmites in Green County. They received funding through the Wisconsin DNR to treat these stands with herbicide. The treatments will begin this fall and continue through 2020.

Non-native invasive weeds can overtake native plants and reduce the amount of food and cover available for native animals and insects. Phragmites is a tall invasive grass that has caused significant habitat loss in eastern Wisconsin, and is beginning to move into Green County. Phragmites can also create a fire hazard as the 15-foot-tall plants dry out.  Volunteers are needed to help cut and stack the dead phragmites stalks in late fall.
