MONROE - Eleven members of the Green County 4-H camp staff team joined together with youth counselors and adult volunteers from 18 other counties April 21-22 at Upham Woods for camp counselor training. They learned how to be a supportive role model for younger campers and develop engaging camp programs and they role-played common summer camp scenarios to be better prepared for their own summer camp sessions.

Green County 4-H summer camps are made possible by 11 teen leaders and six to eight adult volunteers, along with youth and adults from Rock County 4-H. This counselor training weekend is a valued part of the camp staff training program, which helps youth camp staff develop the planning, teaching and mentoring skills they will need to be successful at camp.

Green County and Rock County 4-H programs will be camping together August 12-15 at Upham Woods. There will be a cabin camp for third- through sixth-grade students and a river canoe outpost camp for seventh- and eighth- graders. Due to the support of the 4-H adult leaders, Green County 4-H members can attend at a reduced cost. Upham Woods is an outdoor learning center located near Wisconsin Dells and provides educational opportunities to youth and adults through programs focused on environmental and leadership education.
