Donations being sought for Albany library auction

ALBANY - Albertson Memorial Library in Albany is preparing for its 10th Annual Fall Silent Auction, held between Sept. 23 and Oct. 7.

The auction raises funds to support, maintain and update technology related to computers, wireless internet, copying/scanning services and digital subscription services such as e-books and e-magazines.

The library accepts donations of items, gift cards or prepared auction baskets. Past basket themes have included beauty products, seasonal or local foods, artwork, fall decor, baby toys and necessities, activity baskets for children, baking essentials, book/movie combinations and other specialty items and gift certificates from local and regional businesses. Donations may be made by businesses, organizations, groups or individuals.

Donations are appreciated by early September. They can be mailed or dropped off at 200 N. Water St., Albany, 53502, or by contacting the library at 608-862-3491 or albanypl@tds.net to request a pick-up.

Baskets may be viewed and bid on between Sept. 23 and Oct. 7.

MHS student

graduates Army Basic Training

MONROE - Monroe resident and high school senior Derek L. Johnson graduated Army Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, on Aug. 24.

Johnson is a private in the United States Army Reserves. He completed basic training with 3rd Platoon, Bravo Company, 2-13th Infantry Regiment, 193rd Infantry Brigade at Fort Jackson.

Johnson is a "split-ops" soldier, who joined the Army Reserves and completed basic training before the start of his senior year of high school.

After his graduation from Monroe High School, he will attend Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Jackson. He plans to study a leadership-related major at a university.

Johnson attended Viroqua schools before moving to Monroe in the middle of his junior year of high school. He is the son of Monroe's Matthew Johnson and Juli Kelly of La Crosse.

Johnson is currently stationed with the 95th Training Division, Milwaukee.
