MONROE - A total of $20,000 in monetary awards is available through the teacher recognition program for School District of Monroe educators through the Colony Brands Foundation Teacher Recognition Program.

This is the second year of the program.

The goal of the program is to partner with the district to help retain and attract high-quality teachers.

Community members are encouraged to nominate a School District of Monroe educator for the 2018 program. Nomination forms can be found on the district's website at www.monroeschools.com.

Nominations are due Dec. 1. Teachers nominated will go through an application process. Teachers also are encouraged to apply directly for the award.

Colony Brands committed to a five-year pilot of the program beginning in 2017. Up to $20,000 in monetary awards may be made in each year of the pilot.

The idea for the teacher recognition program came about during ongoing discussions between the foundation and the district over the course of a four-year partnership involving a $400,000 technology initiative funded by the foundation. In 2017, seven teachers were awarded the honor.

The teacher recognition program recognizes that schools are a cornerstone of a strong community and educators are pivotal in helping to inspire future community leaders. Striving to improve, innovate and create, relentlessly pursuing excellence and generously supporting our communities are among the values at Colony Brands and for their employees, and this program puts those values into action.

Teachers who apply for the award are asked to submit information on their leadership characteristics, significant educational achievements in student growth and leadership and other roles both for the school district and the community.
