MONROE - Carl Schwartz, coordinator for Bird City Wisconsin, recently presented Mayor William Ross with a plaque and signage recognizing that Monroe is now one of the 54-plus recognized Bird Cities in Wisconsin. The designation was initiated by Green-Rock Audubon Society members from Monroe, working closely with City Parks Director Paul Klinzing.

Schwartz presented Ross with a recognition plaque suitable for public display, two street signs with the Bird City emblem for placement on roads entering the city, and an all-weather flag that can be flown at a prominent civic location. A page will also be devoted to the City of Monroe on the Bird City web site at www.birdcitywisconsin.org.

To qualify for Bird City, Monroe had to meet 7 of 22 basic requirements to achieve certification. The main categories are creation and protection of habitat, participation in promoting healthy forest management such as Tree City USA, limiting or removing hazards to birds, public education, and participation in Migratory Bird Day.

Monroe's efforts to improve bird habitat, manage woodlands, limit hazards to birds and educate it's citizens about birds qualified the city for recognition. For more information about Bird City, visit www.birdcitywisconsin.org.
