MADISON - Wisconsin State Fair Officials are currently accepting applications for 2009 Century and Sesquicentennial Farm and Home Awards.
The Century Farm and Home Program began in 1948 to celebrate century farm owners carrying on family traditions that are deeply rooted in a pioneering spirit, hard work and dedication to Wisconsin's rich family farming tradition. The Sesquicentennial Home Program was added in 1998.
There are currently more than 8,180 Century Farms and Homes throughout the state and more than 500 families have received the honor of owning a Sesquicentennial property. To qualify for the awards, families are required to provide proof of continuous family ownership of a property in the state of Wisconsin for either the last 100 or 150 years.
"My family farm qualified for state century farm designation a few years ago," said Schultz. "My grandparents purchased our farmstead in western Sauk County in 1897. In 1954, it was passed to my parents, Walter and Lillian Schultz, and in 1996 my wife Rachel and I became the owners."
For an application, write to: Century or Sesquicentennial Farm and Home Program, 640 South 84th St., West Allis, WI 53214 or (414) 777-0580.
The deadline for applications is March 1. All property owners selected will be honored at a special program held on Aug. 11 in conjunction with the Wisconsin State Fair.
