Celebration continues for local DAR chapter
Community Brief

MONROE — The Colonel Benjamin Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was organized 100 years ago in Monroe. In October of this year the group will celebrate 100 years since it was established officially as a chapter. It began with members of the Rhoda Hinsdale Chapter of Shullsburg.

The Shullsburg chapter has since disbanded but the Monroe chapter well represents all of southwest Wisconsin and some of Illinois. Currently members are from Cottage Grove, Darlington, Monroe, Brodhead, Browntown, Argyle, South Wayne, Gratiot, Monticello, Verona, Mt. Horeb, New Glarus and Davis, Illinois. There are also former Wisconsin residents that continue their membership from homes in Florida.

DAR is a women’s service organization, begun in 1890, with three areas of focus: historical preservation, education and patriotism. The Colonel Benjamin Harrison chapter is active in the community with celebration of Constitution Day in September, and the Good Citizen awards to high school students every year. The Chapter sends donations of fabric and funds to Quilts of Honor, and supports veterans’ groups, memorials and historical societies. Those with questions or any interest in DAR should contact Barb at 608-482-2483, or visit the national website: or the chapter website:

The chapter began celebrating the 100th anniversary with an appearance in the 2018 Cheese Days Parade and this year will help Argyle celebrate their 175th anniversary, and have a celebration banquet in the fall.

One hundred years is a milestone to celebrate and a good time to look back. The chapter will create a keepsake book from photos in the many years of scrapbooks. Any past members or relatives of DAR members are welcome to have input or contribute photos.

Past members may obtain a copy of the completed book. Contact the chapter to ensure enough copies are printed.
