Carp contest set for holiday weekend

ALBANY - There's a bounty out for those nasty varmints robbing the Sugar River of its natural game fish.

The Lake Winnetka/Sugar River Improvement Association Inc. will hold its annual Carp Fishing Contest on Labor Day weekend Friday, Aug. 29 through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1, in Albany, rain or shine.

Prizes consisting of cash or merchandise will be awarded to the top five contestants with the most carp caught regardless of size. A special prize of $100 will be awarded this year for the largest carp caught.

No registration is required to compete in the contest, but you must have a valid Wisconsin-fishing license.

Qualifying carp must be caught from the Sugar River in Albany or on the millpond (Lake Winnetka) upstream of the Albany Dam. The shallow muddy areas of the lake are where many carp hide out. The dam is open and water is shallow, but the carp are still there.

The goal of the contest is to provide a fun way to help game fish proliferate more abundantly by removing as many carp as possible.

Participants may start fishing anytime on Friday, Aug. 29 and fish all weekend. The contest ends at 1 p.m. on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1. Prizes will be awarded rain or shine in the park by the Albany boat ramp. For more information call (608) 862-1698 or (773) 418-7123 or e-mail: lwsria@aol.com.
