WAUSAU - Members of the Blackhawk Technical College Monroe Campus Postsecondary Agricultural Students (PAS) organization participated in the state PAS competition Feb. 6-8.
Competition areas included career planning, employment interviewing, livestock specialist, agronomy/soils specialist, impromptu speaking, agricultural sales, agricultural machinery service technician, dairy specialist and equine specialist.
Participants also had the opportunity to meet with current leaders in agribusiness and network with other students from across the state.
Members that participated included Danielle Hagen, Jacob Jamerson and Megan Vosberg. All are in their second semester at BTC. They competed against students in their second year or who have recently graduated from a two-year program.
Jamerson competed in the dairy specialist competition which included a written test and problem-solving. He placed 26th out of 35 individuals.
Vosberg and Hagen competed as a team in the agronomy/soils specialist competition and placed sixth out of 12 teams and 13th and 15th, out of 35 individuals. The contests included a written test, problem-solving and identification.
All three students competed in the dairy employment interview competition, in which Hagen qualified for the finals and earned second place, Vosberg earned fourth place, and Jamerson earned 20th of 25 individuals. Hagen and Vosberg qualified for nationals for the employment interview, and Vosberg and Hagen as a team qualified for the soils specialist competition.
Hagen and Vosberg were slated to participate in the National PAS competition, held in Des Moines, during March. The week-long conference was to include a variety of competitions and tours of local successful agribusinesses, including John Deere, Titan Tire and Pioneer Hybrids International. Students were also to participate in a career fair and agricultural workshops.
