BRODHEAD - A human rights worker and leader of an international organization promoting education in the world's newest nation will speak at the Brodhead United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 5.

The speaker, Anita Henderlight of Knoxville, Tenn., a founder and executive director of the Africa Education and Leadership Initiative (Africa ELI), will speak at worship services at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. at the church, 501 1st Center Ave. She will be honored at a potluck lunch after the second service.

Henderlight will speak on the Republic of South Sudan, which became the world's newest nation on July 9, 2011, seven months after the region's voters approved independence by a majority of more than 98 percent.

Africa ELI was founded in 2006 to support education of girls and young women in the region. It expanded to enroll boys as well as girls and, in December 2011, celebrated its first graduation with a class of 54 students.
