BRODHEAD - The Brodhead Police Department routinely recovers abandoned bicycles as well as other abandoned property. However, the department's abandoned property room is at capacity, and the department needs to make room.

The Brodhead Police Department will conduct a silent auction from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 7 during the city's annual Autumn Festival. The silent auction will be held rain or shine in the department's parking lot at 1004 W. Exchange St., Brodhead. Bicycles of all sizes and conditions will be available for bidding, as well as other recovered property.

After noon, the department will contact the highest bidder. The highest bidder will have one hour to claim their winnings before the department will move to the next highest bidder.

Those who may be missing a bicycle are encouraged to come to the department before Oct. 5 to determine if their bicycle or property may be among those items being sold at the silent auction. Police will require proof such as identifying characteristics, serial numbers and receipt of purchase or other information that reflects rightful ownership.

Police encourage all residents to keep records of such information on all their valuable property, including bicycles, in case they are lost or stolen. The department encourages victims of theft to report incidents to establish a record of the items stolen. The goal is to return property to its rightful owners.

Police encourage everyone living in Brodhead to license their bicycles so they can be returned in case of loss or theft. Licenses are available for purchase at the Brodhead Police Department. Residents living in the townships surrounding the city also may get a bicycle license if their township requires bicycle licenses.
