DARLINGTON - Lafayette County Health Department/Home Care workers will be sporting pink exam gloves throughout October to mark the nation's 25th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The pink exam gloves, worn nationwide, are a way to show solidarity with survivors and raise awareness of the disease.
"These pink gloves that our caregivers are wearing are a visible reminder that early detection and prevention is key," Health Officer Debbie Siegenthaler said.
"Mammography screening remains the single most effective method of detecting breast cancer in an early, treatable stage."
Siegenthaler added that if all women 40 and older received regular mammograms and screenings, the death rate for the disease would fall by 20 to 30 percent.
In addition to raising awareness, the pink gloves help provide free mammograms to women who need them - Medline, the gloves' manufacturer donates $1 for every thousand gloves sold to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The foundation has provide more than 130,000 free screenings since 2004.
