Boyer contest winners named

FREEPORT - Winners of the 2009 Boyer Colloquium high school video, photo and written essay contest were recently released.

The first place winner of the written essay contest was Maria Heath, West Carroll High School and second place was awarded to Clayton Shick, Orangeville High School. The first place team award for the video contest was awarded to the River Ridge Servant Leaders, and included Jenna Diestelmeier, Tori Ertmer, Amy Graves, Kiresten Bauer, Danesa Boehm, Anna Smith, and Darcy Steffes. The photo contest team award was presented to Freeport High School, Jobs for Illinois Grads, Wendy Erbsen, teacher.

Contest participants attended a presentation by Jay Butera, sponsored by the Boyer Colloquium held at Highland Community College, or at one of the local high schools. The topic of the contest was "The Frugal Citizen's Guide to Global Warming: How We Can Save Money, Rescue the Economy and Save the Planet, Too." Entries reflected the opinions of the student participants.

The Boyer Colloquium, an annual event sponsored by the late Dr. M. E. Boyer, was created in 1994 to help students understand the importance of the inter-relationships between ethics, economics, and ecology.
