Forty Monroe Middle School Project World students hosted a community blood drive in the school gym Wednesday, Dec. 17. The students met with a Red Cross spokesman to ask questions, recruited teachers and family members to donate, and made invitations, reminders and thank-you cards. Students secured 60 reservations for blood donors, surpassing the goal of 50 donations set by the Red Cross. They also provided all the food and beverages for the refreshment area and staffed blood donation stations. Teacher Deb Freitag, who along with Nadine Whiteman coordinates Project World, said this is the first time the middle school has hosted a blood drive. The drive fit in with the students recent unit on consumption and its focus on non-material gift-giving.
