Bike trip set for tonight

MONTICELLO - The River Alliance of Wisconsin is planning an evening ride on one of the state's oldest bike trails, the Sugar River State Trail, on Thursday, July 17.

The ride will follow the Little Sugar River as it heads toward the main stem of the Sugar River. There's much to see and learn about the Sugar River on this excursion, such as:

• How agricultural practices affect the river and how wetlands and forested buffers along the river aid river health.

• Roadblocks to reducing nonpoint source runoff and how Wisconsin Environmet.

• The history of the Sugar River Trail and its importance as a wildlife corridor.

The trip will start and end at a trailhead in Monticello, with a light picnic dinner before the ride. The ride is a typical state bike trail - flat, with a gravel base and a few small road crossings. The ride is expected to take no more than an hour and a half (about 15 miles total), though participants have the option of turning back earlier than the rest of the group. Children are welcome.

The picnic dinner will start at 5:30 p.m. and the ride will begin about no later than 6:30. The ride will head toward Albany and then turn around and return to the Monticello trailhead, with the goal of finishing up by 8 p.m. After the ride, participants are invited to stop for a cold beverage.
