BROOKFIELD - Joan Miller, accounting teacher at Black Hawk High School in South Wayne, has been awarded a 2009 Accounting Careers Awareness Grant in the amount of $1,186 from the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation, Inc.

Accounting teachers who participated in the fall 2009 WICPA High School Educators Symposium were offered the opportunity to write proposals about why they should receive funding. Miller was one of 24 teachers to receive a grant.

Miller will use her grant money to take her students on a field trip to Chicago where they will visit the Federal Reserve, Chicago Board of Trade and the Art Institute of Chicago, meeting with accountants at each location.

The grant allows schools to partner with CPAs to give students the opportunity to see what it is like to be a CPA.

"The WICPA Educational Foundation is pleased with Miller's plan to bring accounting to the lives of her students," said Jim Miller, president of the Educational Foundation.

The WICPA encourages lasting innovations that can be shared with other teachers. In addition, it supports career awareness and also provides accounting scholarships and grants to individuals and organizations that aim to further their education in accounting.
