BeST Communication offers free workshops for caregivers of elderly

MONROE - Those who attend doctor's appointments with someone who is over 60 years old may be interested in BeST Communication, a new research study in Green County.

BeST Communication is an educational workshop that meets once a week for four weeks. Its main points are to help caregivers better prepare for visits, know what to do and how to ask questions during visits, and know what to expect after an appointment. It also features a physician's point of view with a speaker who has practiced medicine for many years.

The free workshop is only for unpaid individuals who attend doctor's appointments with someone age 60 or older. There is also free respite available for those who need it.

Dr. Paul Smith from the University of Wisconsin developed the project, with help from the Green County Caregiver Coalition, Monroe Clinic and the Aging and Disability Resource Center as local partners.

BeST Communication will be holding the last class from 5 to 7 p.m. starting Aug. 7 at the Monroe Clinic. Pre-registration is required; to sign up, contact the aging and disability resource center at 608-328-9499.
