Behring Senior Center plans outings, events for new year

MONROE - Behring Senior Center in Monroe has several trips planned for the upcoming year, including: The Art Institute of Chicago; Oneida Nation tour; First Lady River Cruise; The Sanfilippo Estate; Christmas at the Palace; a Brewers vs. Cubs game; Jumer's Casino and Hotel; Lady Luck Casino; White Pines John Denver Tribute; The Carol Burnett Show; Kenny and Dolly Tribute, and "Off the Beaten Path" trip.

Trip sign-up day will be from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 10. Participants may sign up for themselves and one other person for the trips they want to attend. A deposit of one-half of the trip cost is required for each trip. Reservation forms and information is available at the front desk of the Behring Senior Center, 1113 10th St. Trips are available to anyone 55 and older. There are also many activities planned. All events and classes are open to anybody age 55 and older.

A veteran's monthly breakfast is held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month. The next one will be Jan. 4. The cost is a suggested donation of $2. This event is for veterans and spouses ages 55 and older. A home-cooked breakfast will be served. This is sponsored by the center.

Author Ronald Berger will discuss his book "Surviving the Holocaust" at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at the senior center. The book documents two brothers who survived the Holocaust in Nazi-occupied Poland. One brother endured several concentration camps, and the other brother survived outside the camps by passing as a Catholic among anti-Semitic Poles. This is a free event.

Bingo and Breakfast will be Jan. 13. Breakfast will be from 8 to 10 a.m. and bingo is at 9 a.m. Breakfast includes egg casserole, muffin, oatmeal, toast, juice and fruit. Breakfast is $8 for ages 55-59 and is on a donation basis for anyone age 60 and older. Coffee and teas are available for purchase. A "Computer for the Absolute Beginner Workshop" will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 17 at the center. The cost is $12. This workshop is for anyone who does not know a lot about how to operate a computer and is interested in expanding their knowledge about how computers work. Basic hardware and software terms, opening and closing files, using the mouse and more will be explored, all in a relaxed atmosphere.

A men's outing is planned with lunch at Suisse Haus at noon followed by a tour of the Monroe Airport at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 17. The cost of lunch and transportation is the responsibility of each attendee. Tour the new airport building and learn what goes on behind the scenes at the airport. Sign up by calling the senior center.

A workshop on "Facebook Basics" will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 16 and 17. This workshop will explain what Facebook is and how to create a profile on Facebook. Refresh your knowledge about Facebook, learn what should and should not be posted online or come just to see how Facebook works. The cost is $12.
