Artists explore painting works indoors versus out

MONROE - Which is better - inside or out?

On Saturday and Sunday, June 6 and 7, a two-day workshop led by artists Jonathan Wilde and Tina Duemler will help participants explore and answer the question of whether painting inside or outside is the best. Participants will have the opportunity to paint or draw inside by using photographic references, and then move outside to paint "plein air." Plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air" and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors on-the-spot.

Both Wilde and Duemler will share their approaches to both ways of painting the ever-changing landscape. Numerous demonstrations and examples of their work will be a part of the workshop. After two days of exploring the different methods of landscape painting and drawing, workshop participants and the instructors will discuss the advantages of both approaches. This class has been specifically designed for beginners to advanced art students, and all painting and drawing mediums are welcome.

Jonathan Wilde has been painting for more than 38 years. His work is representational and focuses on birds and Wisconsin landscapes with both watercolors and oil. Top galleries throughout Wisconsin represent Wilde's work, and he frequently participates in juried art shows. In addition to painting, Wilde has taught landscape and figure painting workshops through the University of Wisconsin Extension.

Tina Duemler has been teaching art for 18 years through workshops, classes, art centers, and colleges. In 2007, she was one of 37 nationally invited artists to the Door County Plein Air Festival, as well as participated in the St. Petersburg, Florida juried plein air event, Paint the Town. The workshop will take place at the Monroe Arts Center located at 1315 11th Street in Monroe, Wisconsin. Workshop hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 6 and 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 7. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend both workshop days. The fee for this two-day workshop is $180. The fee to attend one workshop day is $90. The registration fee covers instruction, handouts, and critique. Participants must provide their own painting and drawing supplies.
